A WhatsApp button with a pre-filled message is a link in WhatsApp's own click-to-chat format: wa.me/ followed by your full international number, plus an optional ?text= part that types a message for the visitor. On QKAP you don't need to build that link by hand. Add WhatsApp in Profile → Social & contact, pick your country code and type your number (for example +91 98765 43210), write a message of up to 300 characters, and show it as a small icon or a full-width button. It's free on every plan. Visitors tap it, WhatsApp opens with your message ready, and they press send.
Key takeaways
- Click-to-chat links follow the format
https://wa.me/919876543210?text=...: the number in international format without the plus, then an optional encoded message. - Always include your country code. QKAP's country-code picker starts on India (+91) and a bare 10-digit number counts as Indian, so creators elsewhere should pick their country or type the number with + first.
- A Social & contact WhatsApp entry can be an icon or a button, with button text up to 40 characters and a message up to 300 characters.
- WhatsApp items inside posts add product details to the message and their taps are counted in analytics; profile and floating-button taps aren't counted separately.
- Your number becomes public on your page, so consider a separate WhatsApp Business number.
How click-to-chat links work
According to WhatsApp's Help Center (checked October 2026), click to chat lets anyone start a chat with a number without saving it to their contacts, as long as that number has an active WhatsApp account. The link is https://wa.me/ followed by the full phone number in international format, leaving out any plus sign, leading zeros, brackets or dashes.
To pre-fill a message, add ?text= and the message, URL-encoded. Spaces become %20, so "Hi I want to order" becomes https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%20I%20want%20to%20order. The message appears in the chat's text field; the visitor still has to tap send, which means they can edit it first. WhatsApp says click to chat works in the phone app and on WhatsApp Web.
Every WhatsApp link generator and every link-in-bio WhatsApp button is ultimately building this same kind of link. The differences are in how easy it is to get the number right, where the button sits and what the message says.
Number formats that work
The country code is the part people get wrong. WhatsApp can't guess which country "98765 43210" belongs to, so the link must carry it. In QKAP's Social & contact editor, a country-code picker sits next to the number box and starts on India (+91). Pick your country, then type the number. If you type or paste a number that starts with + or 00, the picker switches to that country for you:
| What you enter | What QKAP uses | Why |
|---|---|---|
| +91 picked, then 98765 43210 | 919876543210 | India's code comes from the picker |
| +91 picked, then 098765 43210 | 919876543210 | The leading 0 is dropped |
| +44 7700 900123, typed or pasted | 447700900123 | Numbers written with + keep their own country code |
| 0044 7700 900123 | 447700900123 | A leading 00 works like + |
The final number must be 8 to 15 digits including the country code. You can also paste an existing wa.me link; QKAP reads the number and the message from it. WhatsApp items inside posts follow the same rule: a bare 10-digit number is treated as Indian, and a number written with + keeps its own code. Older wa.me links that hold a bare 10-digit Indian mobile keep working.
One trap for creators outside India: numbers in the US and Canada are also 10 digits. If you leave the picker on +91 and type one, it's saved as an Indian number and the chat goes nowhere. Choose +1 first, or type the number starting with +1.
Adding WhatsApp in Social & contact
- Open Dashboard → Profile → Social & contact. WhatsApp is the first option in the platform picker.
- Pick your country code (it starts on India, +91), then type your number.
- Write your pre-filled message, up to 300 characters, or leave it empty for a blank chat.
- Choose how it shows: a small icon in your header, or a full-width button under your bio. Button text can be up to 40 characters; the default is "Chat on WhatsApp".
- Drag entries to reorder them. You can have up to 15 Social & contact entries per page.
- Save, then test the button from your own phone through Instagram's in-app browser.
If you link several social profiles from your bio, our guide to putting multiple links in your Instagram bio explains how a link-in-bio page keeps them in one place.
Profile button vs WhatsApp items in posts vs the floating button
QKAP gives you three places for a WhatsApp chat, and each suits a different job:
- Profile button (Social & contact): general contact for anyone who lands on your page. Your pre-filled message is the whole message.
- WhatsApp items in posts: for a specific product. The message starts with your own text (up to 300 characters), then adds what the visitor tapped: title, price, coupon, brand, which post it came from, a short reference like "Ref: Q23-P2" and the link. Order buttons also add lines for quantity, name and delivery PIN code. The whole message is capped at 1,000 characters, and you can switch the details block off per item. Taps are counted in your analytics. Our guide to taking WhatsApp orders from Instagram covers this flow, and the WhatsApp and call orders page summarises it.
- Floating button: a button in the corner of every page that opens your WhatsApp chat straight away, or a menu of your contact links. Our floating contact button guide covers the setup.
| Where the button lives | Best for | Message | Taps counted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile, as an icon | Creators who rarely take chats | Your own text | No |
| Profile, as a button | Sellers and service creators | Your own text | No |
| Item inside a post | Orders and questions about one product | Your text plus item details and a reference | Yes |
| Floating button | Pages where chatting is the main action | Your own text | No |
Some buyers would rather call than type. If that's your audience, our guide to call-to-order buttons for small sellers explains when a phone button works better.
Six pre-filled message templates
Keep messages short and add blanks the visitor can fill in. Each of these fits well inside 300 characters:
- Order: "Hi! I'd like to order from your page. Item: ___ Size or colour: ___ Delivery PIN code: ___"
- Enquiry: "Hi! I saw your page and have a question about ___"
- Collab: "Hi, I'm ___ from ___. We'd like to talk about a collaboration. Budget and timeline: ___"
- Booking: "Hi! I'd like to book a session. Preferred date and time: ___"
- Support: "Hi, I need help with my order. Order number: ___"
- Bulk order: "Hi! I'm interested in a bulk order of ___ (quantity: ___). Please share pricing."
Because each WhatsApp entry has its own message, you can add two entries with different text and button labels, such as "Order on WhatsApp" and "Collabs on WhatsApp". Emoji and the ₹ sign are fine; QKAP encodes the message for you. For replies once the chats arrive, see our WhatsApp order message templates.
Other ways to make a WhatsApp chat button
QKAP isn't the only way to get a button with a ready-typed message. As of October 2026, per each provider's own help or pricing pages:
| Option | Pre-filled message | Cost to start | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build the wa.me link yourself | Yes, add ?text= | Free | You encode the message and check the number format yourself |
| WhatsApp Business app short link | Yes, a default message you set | Free with the Business app | Created automatically; found under Tools, Short link |
| wa.link generator | Yes, a custom message | Free basic link; Premium is USD $9 a year per link | Free links use random characters; editing and click analytics are Premium |
| Linktree or Beacons | Yes, if you paste a full wa.me link with ?text= | Both have free plans | The button is a normal link to a wa.me URL |
| Taplink | Yes, a "Text message template" field in its Messengers block | Check Taplink's plans for which tier includes messenger buttons | You can add several WhatsApp buttons |
| QKAP (our product) | Yes, up to 300 characters; post items add the product details | Free on every plan | Country-code picker; taps on WhatsApp items in posts are counted |
QKAP is our product, so weigh this table accordingly. For a full ranking with stated criteria, read best link-in-bio tools with a WhatsApp chat button.
Privacy: your number becomes public
Anything in a wa.me link is visible to anyone who opens your page, including people who copy numbers in bulk. Before you add a button:
- Consider a separate number. WhatsApp's own features page lists greeting messages, away messages, quick replies and labels in the WhatsApp Business app, which help when chats pile up.
- Set expectations. Mention your reply hours in the pre-filled message or bio so buyers aren't left waiting.
- Offer a no-number option. QKAP's inbox lets followers message you through your page without seeing your phone number, which suits brand enquiries.
Frequently asked questions
Does a WhatsApp button work on a laptop?
WhatsApp says click to chat works in the phone app and on WhatsApp Web. So a visitor on a laptop can start the chat if they use WhatsApp Web; otherwise they can open your page on their phone. Most visitors from Instagram are on their phones anyway.
Can I add two WhatsApp numbers?
Yes. Add two WhatsApp entries in Social & contact, each with its own number, message and button text, within the limit of 15 entries. Label them clearly, for example "Orders" and "Wholesale", so visitors pick the right one.
Are taps on the WhatsApp button counted?
Taps on WhatsApp items inside posts are counted in QKAP analytics. Social & contact links and the floating button open WhatsApp directly, so their taps aren't counted separately. If you need numbers for a chat button, put it in a post.
Can I use a WhatsApp Business number?
Yes. Click-to-chat links work with any number that has an active WhatsApp account, including WhatsApp Business app numbers. Type it with its country code like any other number.
Is the WhatsApp button free on QKAP?
Yes. Social & contact links, including WhatsApp with a pre-filled message, are on every plan. See the pricing page for what Premium adds.
