How to Sell Digital Products with UPI from Your Instagram Bio
A practical guide to selling e-books, presets and templates with UPI from your link in bio: pricing in rupees, checkout, confirming payments and delivering files.
On this page
To sell digital products with UPI, you need three things: a product page with a clear price in rupees, a checkout that shows your UPI QR or opens the buyer's UPI app for the exact amount, and a reliable way to hand over the file only after the money arrives. On a link-in-bio store like QKAP, the buyer pays you directly, taps "I've paid", and you confirm the payment in your Orders list, which unlocks a private download page for them. There's no payment gateway to apply for and no per-sale commission, though you do check each payment yourself.
Key takeaways
- UPI is familiar to Indian buyers, works for small amounts and sends money straight to your bank.
- Direct UPI has no gateway fees, but you must confirm each payment yourself.
- Deliver files through a private link per buyer, not a public Google Drive link that can be forwarded.
- Price clearly in rupees, explain what's inside, and show what happens after payment.
- Add a payment link too if you expect card payments or buyers outside India.
Why UPI suits creator products
Digital products from Indian creators are often modestly priced: a ₹99 recipe e-book, a ₹299 Lightroom preset pack, a ₹499 Notion template or a ₹999 study planner. At these amounts, buyers want the payment to be quick and familiar, and UPI is exactly that. Nearly everyone buying from Instagram already has a UPI app on their phone.
For you, direct UPI means the money goes straight into your bank account. You don't need to apply for a payment gateway or wait for settlements. The trade-off is that nobody confirms the payment for you automatically: you have to check that it arrived. At a few orders a day, that's a couple of minutes.
What you can sell
Almost anything that can be delivered as a file:
- E-books and guides (PDF)
- Lightroom and mobile presets
- Canva, Notion and spreadsheet templates
- Printable planners, worksheets and colouring pages
- Recipe collections and meal plans
- Workout plans and trackers
- Study notes and exam checklists
- Music samples, wallpapers and stock photos
Make sure you have the right to sell everything in the file, including fonts, photos and any content you didn't create yourself.
Step by step: selling a file with UPI on QKAP
1. Add your UPI ID
In Store › Payments, add your UPI ID. At checkout, QKAP shows buyers a UPI QR code for the exact amount, plus a button to open their UPI app on a phone. You can also add a payment link from a service such as Razorpay, Stripe, PayPal or Gumroad for cards and international buyers. A paid product can't be published until at least one payment method is set up.
2. Create a digital download
From the Products page, choose Digital download. Upload your files (up to ten, each up to 100 MB), add a cover image, a title, a description and a price in rupees. You can show an original price struck through beside a sale price, and write a thank-you message with next steps that buyers see after purchase.
3. Share it
Publish the product and it appears in the Shop section of your page. You can also feature it inside a numbered post, next to the reel where you talk about it; see adding your own products to reel posts.
4. The buyer pays you
The buyer taps "Get it now", logs in to a free follower account (or creates one in seconds), then pays you by UPI and taps I've paid, optionally adding the UTR number.
5. You confirm and the file unlocks
In Orders, check the amount and UTR against your UPI app or bank, then tap Mark as paid. The buyer's private page unlocks and they can download the files. Their purchase is also saved in My purchases in their account. The full flow is covered in QKAP Store orders and payments.
Pricing in rupees
There's no formula, but a few principles help:
- Price by outcome, not page count. A 12-page guide that saves someone hours of research can be worth more than a 100-page one that doesn't.
- Use round, readable prices. ₹199, ₹299 or ₹499 are easy to understand on a small screen.
- Try a launch price. Show the regular price struck through and a lower launch price for a limited time, and actually end it when you say you will.
- Offer a free taster. A free lead magnet, such as a one-page checklist, builds an email list you can tell about the paid product later.
- Consider pay-what-you-want for a first product, with a minimum you're comfortable with.
Write a product page that answers questions
Most hesitation comes from uncertainty. Your description should say:
- What's inside, in concrete terms ("42 recipes, each with a shopping list").
- Who it's for and who it isn't for.
- The file format and how they'll open it.
- What happens after payment ("Pay by UPI, tap I've paid, and your download unlocks once I confirm, usually within a few hours").
- How to reach you if something goes wrong.
That last point about timing is important. Buyers used to instant downloads may worry when nothing happens straight away. Telling them up front avoids anxious messages.
Confirming payments without stress
- Check your UPI app at set times, for example morning, lunch and evening, rather than constantly.
- Match by amount and UTR. If two people paid the same amount, the UTR tells them apart.
- Never confirm from a screenshot alone.
- Send a reminder to unpaid orders with the WhatsApp payment reminder from Orders, then let the rest lapse; unpaid orders are cancelled automatically after a week.
When orders pick up after a reel, bulk Mark as paid lets you confirm several at once. See bulk-confirming UPI payments.
Protecting your files
Sharing a public Google Drive link with each buyer means anyone they forward it to can download it too. QKAP downloads only work through each buyer's own private link. If a link gets shared publicly, you can create a new link for that buyer from the order, and the old one stops working. No system can stop someone re-uploading a file they've downloaded, but private links make casual sharing much harder.
A note on tax and records
Income from selling digital products is income, and depending on your situation you may have GST or income-tax obligations. Keep your order records (QKAP's Orders export to CSV helps) and speak to a chartered accountant about what applies to you. QKAP can print receipts with your business name, address and GSTIN if you add them, but whether those meet your obligations is something to check with a professional.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a payment gateway to sell with UPI?
No. With direct UPI, buyers pay to your UPI ID and you confirm the payment yourself. A gateway or payment link is optional, mainly useful for cards and international buyers.
How quickly does the buyer get the file?
As soon as you confirm their payment in Orders. Free products unlock immediately.
Does QKAP take a share of my sales?
No. Payments go straight to you, and QKAP doesn't charge a per-sale fee or commission.
Can I sell to buyers outside India?
Yes, through a payment link from a provider that supports international payments. UPI is for payments in rupees.
Pick one file you already have, such as your most-requested checklist or preset pack, set a simple price and publish it this week. Your first sale will teach you more than another month of planning.
