Announcement Bar vs Pinned Link vs Story Highlight for Promotions
Running a sale or launch? Compare a link-in-bio announcement bar, a pinned or featured link and an Instagram story highlight for visibility, timing and taps.
On this page
An announcement bar is best for time-bound news that should appear on every page of your link in bio, such as "Diwali sale ends Sunday". A pinned or featured link is best for one priority link that should stay on top, and an Instagram story highlight is best for explaining an offer inside Instagram, before anyone taps your bio. For a sale or launch, use all three with the same deadline and the same wording, so followers see one consistent message wherever they look.
Key takeaways
- An announcement bar is a single line at the top or bottom of your link-in-bio page; QKAP's (our product) can be scheduled, show a live countdown and carry one button, on every plan.
- Featured, prioritised and animated links lift one link inside your link list. As of October 2026, Linktree's prioritise and animate options start on its Starter plan, and Beacons can show a countdown on a link button.
- Instagram lets you pin up to three posts to the top of your profile grid, and Highlights keep stories on your profile until you remove them.
- The three placements cover different moments: the highlight explains, the pinned or featured link takes people to the offer, and the bar reminds them of the deadline.
- Only show a countdown when the deadline is real, and take every placement down when the offer ends.
How we compared
We compared the placements on where people see them, how long they last, whether you can schedule them, whether they can show a countdown, and how much effort they take. Facts about Linktree, Beacons and Instagram come from their own pricing and help pages, checked in October 2026 and listed under Sources. QKAP facts come from our own product.
QKAP is our product, so keep that bias in mind. These placements aren't really rivals: they solve different jobs, and the aim here is to show which job each does best.
The announcement bar (QKAP's, with schedule and countdown)
An announcement bar is a thin strip of text that sits above or below everything else on a page. It is built for news with a start and an end: a sale, a launch, a restock, a holiday break.
QKAP's announcement bar has these options:
- Text up to 140 characters, emoji welcome, with an optional icon from 12 choices.
- An optional button, up to 24 characters, linking to an https page or to a page on your own QKAP site, such as the sale post or a collection. A WhatsApp link pre-fills a message.
- Top or bottom placement, sticky or scrolling away, in a solid, gradient or soft style, with a scrolling marquee for longer text.
- A start and end date and time in your own time zone, and an optional live countdown ("Ends in…") that needs an end time.
- An optional close button; the bar stays hidden in that visitor's browser until you change the text.
- Show it on all your pages or on your profile only.
It is available on every plan and is off by default: Dashboard → Appearance → Announcement bar. It does not send notifications or target specific visitors; everyone who opens your page sees the same bar. QKAP also has a separate in-page announcement block you can place between sections in Page layout.
Other tools approach this differently. Linktree's text link app adds "inline text blocks for headlines, announcements, or context between your links" on every plan, which sits inside your list rather than across the page.
Pinned, featured or animated links (as of October 2026)
Many link-in-bio tools let you lift one link above the rest.
Linktree. Featured links are available on every plan: one on Free and unlimited on Starter, Pro and Premium. Prioritising a link (Redirect, Auto-expand or an Animate effect such as Wiggle, Pop or Shimmer) is available on Starter and above, with one link prioritised and one animated at a time. Scheduling a link to go live and disappear at set times is also Starter and above, per Linktree's pricing page.
Beacons. In the Links block, a timer icon makes a link clickable only from a set time, with "a live countdown on the link button itself". You can schedule a link to appear and to be hidden, animate it, or switch on "Featured" to show it as a large 16:9 image card. Redirect needs a paid plan, per Beacons' help centre.
QKAP. You can pin up to six posts at the top of your numbered grid, add tap-to-copy coupon codes with a live deal countdown to any product, and group sale items into a collection with its own link. Our guide to deals, coupons and countdowns on QKAP covers the setup. You can also move the Shop or Links section higher in Page layout; see what order your link-in-bio sections should go in.
Instagram pinned posts and story highlights
Pinned posts. Instagram's Help Center says you can pin up to three posts to the top of your profile grid, as of October 2026. Pinning works in the Android, iPhone and iPad apps, not on a computer. A pinned launch reel is the first thing profile visitors see on your grid, so use its caption to point people to the link in your bio.
Story highlights. Stories you add to a Highlight stay on your profile until you remove them, even after the original story has expired, and anyone allowed to see your stories can see them. That makes a "Sale" highlight a good place to explain the offer: what's included, prices, the deadline and how to order. Stories can also carry a link sticker; see how to use Instagram's link sticker. For a longer-term version of this idea, read using Instagram Highlights as a shop shelf.

A seven-day sale using all three
Here is a simple plan for a week-long sale, using one message and one deadline everywhere:
- Two days before. Write one line of copy, for example "Festive sale: 20% off all candles, ends Sunday 11 pm". Set up the offer so it ends with the sale: a discount code with an expiry for your own store products, or a coupon code and deal end time on the products in your posts.
- Schedule the bar. Set the announcement bar to start when the sale starts and end at the deadline, switch on the countdown, and point the button at the sale post or collection.
- Day 1. Post the launch reel and pin it to your grid. Post two or three stories explaining the offer, with a link sticker, and save them to a "Sale" highlight placed first.
- Feature the link. Pin the sale post to the top of your QKAP grid, or feature the sale link in your link-in-bio tool.
- Mid-week. Add a reminder story with what's left and any sold-out items, and add it to the highlight.
- Last day. Post a final reminder. The bar's countdown keeps reminding everyone who opens your page.
- After it ends. The bar disappears at its end time and ended deals show "Deal ended". Unpin the reel and the post, and remove or rename the highlight so nobody finds an expired offer.
Frequently asked questions
Do countdowns increase sales?
A real deadline gives people a reason to decide now instead of later, which is why countdowns are common in sales. We don't have data that proves a specific lift, and results vary by audience and offer. Never invent a deadline or restart a countdown, because fake urgency misleads followers and damages trust.
How many posts can I pin on Instagram?
You can pin up to three posts to the top of your Instagram profile grid, according to Instagram's Help Center as of October 2026. You pin posts from the Instagram app on Android, iPhone or iPad, not from a computer.
Should the bar link to my shop or a post?
Link to the most specific page that matches the message, such as the sale post, the product or a sale collection, rather than your whole shop. On QKAP, the bar's button can link to any https page or to a page on your own QKAP site.
Does QKAP's announcement bar cost extra?
No. The announcement bar is included on every QKAP plan, including Free, and is switched off until you turn it on. See pricing for what Premium adds.
Can visitors close the announcement bar?
Yes, if you switch on the close button in QKAP's announcement bar settings. The bar then stays hidden in that visitor's browser until you change its text, so a new announcement shows again.
