A plain wa.me link is free, works everywhere and can carry a pre-filled message, but it can't count clicks or change number later. The WhatsApp Business app adds its own short link and a QR code that doesn't expire unless you reset it. Generator services such as wa.link add branded, editable links and click counts on paid plans. A link-in-bio chat button keeps WhatsApp next to your products, lets you change the number on your page instead of everywhere you posted it and, on QKAP, counts taps on WhatsApp items in your posts. Every option ends in the same WhatsApp chat; the differences are tracking, editing, QR codes and where the link lives.

Key takeaways

  • WhatsApp's own click-to-chat format, wa.me followed by your full number in international format, is free and supports a pre-filled message.
  • The WhatsApp Business app creates a short link automatically, lets you set a default message and gives you a QR code that won't expire unless you reset it.
  • As of October 2026, wa.link offers a free link and QR code, and a Premium link at $9 a year per link with a branded address, editing and click analytics.
  • A link-in-bio chat button is easiest to maintain: change the number once and every place that points to your page stays correct.
  • On QKAP, WhatsApp order buttons in posts pre-fill what the follower tapped (item, price, post number and a short reference), and those taps show up in analytics.

How we compared

We compared four ways of starting a WhatsApp chat on six criteria: pre-filled text, click tracking, changing the number later, QR codes, branding and cost. Facts come from WhatsApp's Help Center, WhatsApp Business pages, Meta's developer documentation and each tool's own site, checked on 17 October 2026 and listed under Sources.

QKAP is our product. We've included it as one example of a link-in-bio chat button and noted what it doesn't do: it doesn't send WhatsApp messages itself or use the WhatsApp Business API.

WhatsApp's click-to-chat link lets anyone start a chat with your number without saving it, as long as the number has an active WhatsApp account. It works in the phone app and on WhatsApp Web.

To build one:

  1. Write your full number in international format, without a plus sign, leading zeros, brackets, spaces or dashes. An Indian number 98765 43210 becomes 919876543210.
  2. Add it after the domain: https://wa.me/919876543210.
  3. To pre-fill a message, add ?text= and your message with spaces written as %20, for example https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%20I%20want%20to%20order.
  4. Test the link on your own phone before you share it.

The message appears in the chat box, and the person still taps send. A link with only ?text= and no number opens a contact picker, which is handy for "send this to a friend" buttons.

Strengths: free, official, no sign-up. Limits: no click count, and the number is baked into the link, so changing numbers means replacing it everywhere you posted it.

If you use the WhatsApp Business app, a short link is created automatically when you set up the account. You find it under Tools, then Short link, and can copy it, share it and set a default message. If the customer has WhatsApp installed, the link opens a chat directly; in a web browser, it first shows a page with your business information and a "Continue to chat" step.

The Business app also gives you a QR code that "won't expire unless you reset it or delete your WhatsApp Business account", according to WhatsApp's Help Center. If you've set a business username, it shows on the code. The same app includes greeting and away messages, quick replies, labels and a catalogue.

WhatsApp doesn't document click analytics for the app's short link. For businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API), Meta's developer documentation says "Analytics are not available for QR Codes and Short Links".

Strengths: official, free entry points, a QR code built for print. Limits: no documented click counts, and it's tied to your Business account.

Generator sites build the same wa.me-style link through a form, often with a QR code. As of October 2026, wa.link's site lists:

  • Free: "USD $0 Forever", with a click-to-chat link on the wa.link domain, a custom message and a QR code, with "no registration required". Free links get random letters and numbers.
  • Walink Premium: "USD $9/year per link", with a branded link such as wa.link/YourBrand, the ability to update the phone number, URL and message, click analytics, catalogue links and a multilink page.
  • Multiagent: "USD $5/agent/month" to put several WhatsApp lines behind one link.

WhatsApp API providers such as Interakt also run free link generators that take a number and an optional message. Wati and AiSensy advertise free generators too. These are usually a doorway to the provider's paid platform.

Strengths: quick, with editable links and click counts on paid plans. Limits: you depend on a third-party service, and per-link pricing adds up across many links.

A link-in-bio page puts your WhatsApp button next to everything else: products, links and your store. You edit the number once on the page, and your bio link, story stickers and QR codes keep working.

  • Linktree handles WhatsApp the generic way: a classic link sends visitors to any URL you paste, so a wa.me link (with your own message) works as a button. Its Community Channels Link App offers access to WhatsApp communities.
  • Taplink has a messaging block with WhatsApp buttons and a "Text message template" field for a pre-filled message; check Taplink's plans for which tier includes it.
  • Beacons treats a WhatsApp button as a normal link holding a wa.me URL, and lists per-link click analytics. Lnk.Bio suggests a WhatsApp social icon or a normal button with a wa.me link, and explains adding ?text= yourself.
  • QKAP offers three main WhatsApp spots, all on every plan. A WhatsApp entry in Social & contact links can carry your own pre-filled message of up to 300 characters and shows as an icon or a full-width button. An optional floating button in the corner of every page can open that WhatsApp chat directly, has a WhatsApp-green colour option and can appear after 3 seconds or after scrolling 25% of the page. And WhatsApp order items inside numbered posts pre-fill your own message, then the item's title, price, coupon, your handle, the post number, a short reference like "Ref: Q23-P2" and the QKAP link; you can switch the details off per item. Order buttons add Quantity, Name and Delivery PIN code lines for the buyer to fill in.

On QKAP, taps on WhatsApp items in posts, and on custom links that point to wa.me, are counted in analytics; the Social & contact icon and the floating button open WhatsApp directly and aren't counted. Each post also has its own short link with source tags. The Social & contact entry is one setting, but each WhatsApp item in a post keeps its own number, so update those items too if your number changes. A bare 10-digit number is treated as Indian (+91), while a number written with + or 00 keeps its own country code. Our guide to taking WhatsApp orders from Instagram walks through the setup.

Which to use where

  • Instagram bio: your link-in-bio page with a WhatsApp button, so followers see products and the chat option together. If WhatsApp is genuinely the only thing you offer, a Business short link works too.
  • Stories and captions: a post's short link if the story is about one product, or a wa.me link with a story-specific message. Our guide to UTM parameters explains tracking for page visits; a bare wa.me link records nothing.
  • Packaging, flyers and print: a QR code that won't break. The Business app's QR code doesn't expire unless you reset it, and your page's QR code lets you change the number later without reprinting. See QKAP short links and QR codes.
  • Phone-first sellers: pair WhatsApp with a call-to-order button for buyers who prefer to talk.
  • Teams with several numbers: wa.link's Multiagent plan or Taplink's multiple WhatsApp buttons let one link reach different people.

Start with the free options, then pay only for what you'll use. You can compare QKAP plans when you need more posts.

Frequently asked questions

The link they create opens a normal WhatsApp chat, and a basic generator only needs your number and message. Be wary of any service that asks for your WhatsApp login or a verification code. Branded links that count clicks route visitors through the service's own domain, so they depend on that service staying online.

Can I track WhatsApp clicks?

Not with a plain wa.me link, and WhatsApp doesn't document click analytics for its short links. To count clicks, put the link behind a tool that measures them: wa.link Premium lists click analytics, and QKAP counts taps on WhatsApp items in your posts and on custom links in its page analytics.

No. wa.me links work with any number that has an active WhatsApp account. The Business app adds a short link, a QR code, greeting and away messages, quick replies, labels and a catalogue.

Usually the number is formatted wrongly. Use the full international number without a plus sign, leading zeros, brackets or dashes, for example 919876543210 for an Indian number, and make sure that number has an active WhatsApp account.

How long can a pre-filled WhatsApp message be?

WhatsApp's click-to-chat page doesn't publish a limit, so keep it to a sentence or two and test it. For API numbers, Meta says a QR scan can pre-fill up to 140 characters. On QKAP, your own message can be up to 300 characters before the item details, and the whole message is capped at 1,000 characters.
